The Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous monastery in Bulgaria, located in the mountains at an altitude of 1147 m above sea level.
It delights with its size and architecture. It was founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan of Rila.
The 2 m thick and 24 m high walls make it look like a fortified fortress.
The inner courtyard is surrounded by three-story buildings with arches painted black and white and wooden cloisters containing monks' cells.
You can see here such monuments as: wall paintings, icons from the 14th and 19th centuries, Raphael's cross carved in wood or the iconostasis of the "Tsar's Gate".
It is also worth seeing the monastery kitchen with cauldrons and bread ovens.
In 1983, the Rila Monastery was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
